Your city preferences

Many large companies exhibiting at The National Job Fair & Training Expo have more than one office in the Greater Toronto Area. Some have offices in other provinces and/or other countries. You are welcome to attend even if our event and your home are in different geographic locations.

Are you willing to relocate? Be prepared to discuss where you would like to work geographically.

Your job preferences

Evaluate what you like doing and what you are looking for in a job. You should know what your most relevant skills are before meeting with the recruiters on-site.

Top

Your one-minute "sales pitch"

Prepare a one-minute "sales pitch". You only have ONE chance to make that first impression, so it pays to be ready. Think about your strong points, your career goals, the company you are approaching and what you would like to accomplish within the company.

When you meet with the recruiters, introduce yourself and, in a few words, state your career goals, making judicious links with the employer's needs. Do it with CONFIDENCE.

Top

Your resumé

Bring several copies of your resumé. Recruiters will have stacks of them to sort through, so make sure yours is up to date and OUTSTANDING!

If you have multiple job goals, which is not unusual today since many people are multi-talented, our suggestion is to prepare different versions of your resumé, tailored to suit the needs of each company you are interested in.

Given the volume of resumés accumulated by recruiters at The National Job Fair & Training Expo, it might be justified to use coloured paper. However, use light colours only.

Top

Your cover letter

You don't need one. By meeting face-to-face with the human resources specialists, YOU are the cover letter!

Top

Your letters of recommendation

Attach copies of your top three letters of recommendation to each resumé you hand out. This way, all the employers you are interested in will get them. References often play a key part in positions being filled, so providing these letters could make your resumé stand out from the stack.

Top

Your portfolio and/or briefcase

Take your portfolio along with you to hold your resumés and letters of recommendation; it will also be useful to hold any notes you've taken after talking with your selected employers.

The amount of information available at The National Job Fair & Training Expo is huge; a briefcase allows you to store the corporate documentation and literature distributed by the exhibitors.

Top

How to dress

Your image plays an even greater role at The National Job Fair & Training Expo than at a normal interview. There are a lot of people seeking the same thing, and recruiters' decisions are made quickly. You have only a short amount of time to make your first impression.

Dress well, but maintain your individuality at the same time. Feeling comfortable with how you look makes a huge difference in your self-confidence.
